Pregnancy should be the best motivation for a woman to stop smoking. This is true in case the woman is the only smoker inside the couple. But we should also underline this should also be the best motivation for the man, if he is smoking too, or if he is the only person smoking in the household. Having a baby is a decision the couple made together (well, it should), not only one person, or this will seriously compromise the happiness of the family.
Since a couple is two persons, we can safely say this would be irrespective for one of the two partners to continue to smoke during pregnancy. The couple should seriously ask questions to itself. These questions could really be hard to hear, but the harm they may do to the baby is far bigger.
These questions involve all the risks that smoking could bring about :
- Miscarriage.
- Premature and smaller babies due to slow fetal growth (smokers parents generally have babies who weigh less than babies from non-smokers parents).
- Babies with lower organs functions (such as smaller lungs). When you smoke your baby gets less oxygen, this causes the slower fetal development and other complications.
- Smokers babies are also more frequently ill than non smokers babies and get painful diseases. They may also be born athsmatic.
Stop Smoking and increase the chance of your baby to LIVE. Smoking is also a factor that cause babies to be stillborn, and the cot death (crib death) risk is twice bigger than non-smokers babies.
It is never too late to stop smoking, but the sooner the better. It is of course advised that you stop smoking BEFORE thinking to have a baby, for BOTH the woman and the man. Now is a godd idea. Think that your baby will take everything from his mother during pregnancy. Smoking causes serious damages in your body, some may be irreversible.
Don’t you want to give him or her the best, even before you introduce him or her to the world ?
This is of course advised to stay away from smoking after the baby is born, but don’t you already know about that ? You would have a living reason to stay a non smoker.
