<p>1. Set up a <em>quit smoking date</em>. Tell everyone you will <em>stop smoking</em> at this date. People around you need to know. Your family first, your lifestyle will start to change and your behavior too. You will take support from them. Is anyone in your family (your partner ?) smoking too ? Why don&#8217;t stop smoking together and support each other. Also your work colleagues and friends need to know. They may be smokers too, so they have to respect your decision and avoid to smoke in the room you are.</p>
<p>2. No more cigarettes. <strong>Throw away the cigarettes</strong> you still have and hide the ashtrays. If you are at a date before your quit date, you will need to find cigarettes elsewhere. At home you will not have anymore cigarettes, and at work you may not want to ask your colleagues. So you will start to cut down your cigarette supply.</p>

<p>You just wanted to try. You just wanted to do what the others were doing. Well done, you tried once and actually you tried twice, and more. When you smoke your first cigarette, can you really be addicted so fast ? It seems yes, isn&#8217;t it too easy for an answer ? The truth is you also wanted to smoke a second cigarette because you &#8220;passed the test&#8221;. You were only a teen, you wouldn&#8217;t die so young, so why bother ? The first cigarette didn&#8217;t really addicted yourself, but others were doing it and they were healthy&#8230; at that time.</p>
<p>Others insisted on you to try, or maybe just asked if you wanted one. You could have said no. You should have said no. Saying NO was even what you thought before you said YES. You knew that it was bad to smoke, you knew the reasons why it was bad.</p>
<p>You wanted to look more mature. A few years ago, I had a walk with a friend. A teen, I may say a child, asked us some fire. My friend asked him how old he was. He answered &#8220;twelve&#8221;. I don&#8217;t know if he still smokes these days but all I can say is this child looked twelve, no more, and a cigarette in the hand didn&#8217;t make him look more mature. I, and you, see also sometimes older teens, 14 or more, they look their ages. Not more. When they will reach 30 or 40, as many of us, they will want to look younger. We all want to be forever young.</p>
<p>You were a rebell. People said it was bad to smoke, because you could have a lung cancer or other diseases. It will make you cough and increase the risk to have a heart attack. You didn&#8217;t care. Hey &#8220;We&#8217;re all gonna die someday !&#8221;. At 15, you already knew that you do what you want with your life. So, you shew your parents, teachers or anyone you chose your way. Who cares you were a rebell now ?</p>
<p>Kids, no one will care more about you because you smoke. If you think smoking attracts the opposite sex or will make you more friends, you&#8217;re wrong.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s pretty funny when you think about it. All these reasons are so stupid. Actually, this is not funny at all.</p>
<p>Now, if you stopped smoking and succeeded, congratulations. I know that is not easy. But if you just decided to <em>quit smoking</em>, or maybe to <strong>stop smoking</strong> AGAIN, you know the situation is not funny. Now do you really want to stop smoking ? Some people say this is a pleasure to smoke, they like it. They also feel a bit of glamour, the movie or photograph style.</p>

The longer you are not smoking the healthier you will get. Okay, you already know that but what happens in your body when you <em>stop smoking</em> in the short, mid and long run. Here is a little timeline and the (almost) immediate <em>effects of stopping smoking</em>.</p>
<p><strong>20 minutes</strong> after you stop smoking your blood pressure will drop back to normal. So does your pulse rate. High blood pressure and pulse rate increases the risk of heart attack. Also the body temperature of hands and feet increases to normal. Are you ready to take these first minutes ? If so, let&#8217;s go further.</p>
<p><strong>8 hours</strong> after you <em>quit smoking</em>, the carbon monoxide levels in your blood will drop by half. Smoking causes carbon monoxide (combustion) in your lungs, but your lungs need oxygen. Carbon monoxide is a POISON. This is why you can&#8217;t breath normally : if you have carbon monoxide in your lungs and blood, you have less oxygen.</p>
<p><strong>24 hours</strong> after your last puff, you get rid of carbon monoxide in your body. You have more oxygen now and can think about sport again !</p>
<p>After <strong>48 hours</strong>, your body also get rid of nicotine. The risk of having a heart attack is lower. The senses of taste and smell will improve. Shall I remind you how smoke stinks ? There are better taste and smells than the cigarette one. Another effect at this time is the nerve endings are regrowing.</p>
<p>After <strong>72 hours</strong>, a nice sequence starts : bronchial tubes will relax, so you will breath more easily. Breathing easily leads to a bigger lung capacity. Breathing better leads to higher energy levels. (Thank you Mr Oxygen !)</p>
<p><strong>From 2 weeks to 6 months</strong> after you quit smoking, many things happen. Your blood circulation constantly improves, walking will become easier, your lung functions increase, you will cough less, sinus congestion will decrease.</p>
<p>After <strong>9 months</strong> you will see improvements for almost everything told above. You really are getting healthier and you will feel it. Your lungs and your heart will thank you.</p>
<p>After <strong>1 year</strong> your risk of having a heart attack will drop by half.</p>
<p>After <strong>5 years</strong> the risk of having a lung cancer decreases.</p>
<p>After <strong>10 years</strong> the risk of lung cancer and other cancers is the same as a non-smoker.</p>

Lots of people take as an excuse that quitting smoking will make them gain weight, and prefer continue smoking instead of gaining a few pounds. The solution is to think or do something else when cravings occur. First, did you know that the average craving last 5 minutes only ?</p>
<p>There are a lot of things you can do within five minutes. When doing something you will at the same time think about what you are doing, therefore you will keep your mind busy. It is up to you to find what is the perfect activity : crosswords, listening to music, watching TV, exercises, calling a friend, writing a letter, browsing the internet. If you can manage to keep your mind AND you hands active, you will generally overcome cravings.</p>
<p>Sport is always an effective way to control your weight, but relaxation is also a method you should consider. <p>The cost of your cigarette packet X 365 days = what you could save and spend elsewhere than in cigarettes.<br />
If you are smoking 2 packets a day just multiply this amount by two.<br />
If your packet costs $5, it&#8217;s $1825 a year that you are spending to destroy your organs.</p>
<p>If you are not smoking a full packet every day, divide the amount of your packet by the number of cigarettes it contains. You now know how much is worth one cigarette.<br />
If your packet is $5 and it contains 20 cigarettes : one cigarette costs 5 / 20 = $0.25</p>
<p>Multiply this by the number you are smoking every day. Say you are smoking 5 cigarettes a day : 0.25 x 5 = $1.25<br />
Finally multiply this by 365 and know how much it is for one year. In this case you would spend $465.</p>
<p>Okay it was just some simple math but what could you buy with $1825, or even just $465. You could offer some nice gift to yourself to reward you to have <em>stopped smoking</em> for such a long time. Even each month the amount could be spent on gas for your car or in a restaurant with your loved one.</p>
<p>Now how many years have you been smoking ? 10 years ? You may have spent $18,250, it could have been a new car. So you need to compensate the lack of this by something else, and often you eat more than you should. The compensation is one of the 2 reasons that make you <em>gain weight</em>.</p>
<p>The second reason is because of the metabolism. People with higher metabolism, burn more calories. This is the case when you are a smoker : your body fights against the toxins all day, so your metabolism accelerates. When you become a non smoker, your body don&#8217;t have toxicity anymore to fight, and your metabolism slow down. The result is of course that you don&#8217;t burn calories as fast as you did.</p>
<p>So eating to compensate the cigarette and having a slower metabolism leads you to gain weight. Metabolism is something bodybuilders know well. What&#8217;s the relation with bodybuilding, you ask.
