You stopped smoking or are think about stopping smoking. You know this is or will be hard for you. More than motivation, you will need help to avoid or at least reduce the drug withdrawal symptoms. So here are some stop smoking tips to help you not taking anymore cigarettes.
1. Set up a quit smoking date. Tell everyone you will stop smoking at this date. People around you need to know. Your family first, your lifestyle will start to change and your behavior too. You will take support from them. Is anyone in your family (your partner ?) smoking too ? Why don’t stop smoking together and support each other. Also your work colleagues and friends need to know. They may be smokers too, so they have to respect your decision and avoid to smoke in the room you are.
2. No more cigarettes. Throw away the cigarettes you still have and hide the ashtrays. If you are at a date before your quit date, you will need to find cigarettes elsewhere. At home you will not have anymore cigarettes, and at work you may not want to ask your colleagues. So you will start to cut down your cigarette supply.
3. Get rid of the smoke odor. Clean the house, your clothes, everything that smells smoke.
4. Change your lifestyle. Were you smoking after diner ? With a coffee ? Replace cigarette by something else, a sugarless chewing gum for example.
5. Do something else. Nicotine abstinence syndrome or (withdrawal symptoms) will make you nervous. So you would want to have a cigarette. You have to keep your body and mind busy. Go for a walk, call a friend (maybe a person who chose to stop smoking with you) and get support, breath deeply, write a letter, listen to music, clean the house.
6. Eat and drink. You know stopping smoking may make you gain some weight. But don’t smoke another cigarette to lose weight, this is not a solution. Eat fruits and vegetables, drink plenty of water. 7. Make yourself a gift. You didn’t buy cigarettes for a while so you saved money. How much is it for a week, a month or a year ? You deserved to offer you or someone you love a gift. It can be a nice restaurant with your partner, vacation with your whole family or even the fuel for your car. This will satisfy you and be a concrete proof of your achievement.
There are many more things to do instead of smoking. Just think about something you can or like to do. Anytime you want to smoke, just do this special thing you like. And tell yourself : I want to stop smoking !
